On 21 December 2020, Tesla, Inc. was added to the S&P 500 index, becoming the largest company ever admitted to the index by market capitalisation. With a market value of approximately USD 650 billion at the time of inclusion, Tesla's addition was larger than the entire market capitalisation of the next 19 largest additions combined.

Tesla's inclusion followed four consecutive quarters of profitability, the criterion used by S&P Dow Jones Indices for eligibility. The stock had gained approximately 740% in 2020 alone, making it one of the best-performing stocks in the world. The addition required index funds to purchase approximately USD 90 billion of Tesla shares to rebalance their portfolios.

The inclusion represented a milestone for the electric vehicle industry and for the broader market. Tesla's valuation, at more than 1,000 times its 2020 earnings, was extraordinary by traditional metrics and reflected investor expectations about the future of electric vehicles, autonomous driving, and battery technology.

The addition also had mechanical implications for the market. Because Tesla's weight in the index was so large, its price movements had a measurable impact on the S&P 500's performance. Index funds and passive strategies were required to hold the stock, regardless of valuation concerns.

For investors, Tesla's inclusion illustrated how index composition changes can affect portfolios, and how market capitalisation-weighted indices can become concentrated in individual stocks that have experienced significant price appreciation. Investors should be aware of the composition of any index-linked investments they hold and consider whether concentration risks have increased over time. Active investors, by contrast, retain the ability to adjust positions based on their own assessment of valuation and fundamentals.
