In January 2021, GameStop Corporation (GME) became the centre of one of the most dramatic short squeezes in financial history. The stock, which had traded below USD 20 per share at the start of the month, reached an intraday high of USD 483 on 28 January 2021, a gain of more than 1,500%.

The squeeze was driven by retail investors coordinating on the Reddit forum r/WallStreetBets and trading through zero-commission brokerage apps. GameStop had been one of the most heavily shorted stocks in the market, with short interest exceeding 100% of available shares. When retail buying drove the price higher, short sellers were forced to buy shares to cover their positions, creating a feedback loop that amplified the price movement.

Hedge funds with short positions in GameStop suffered significant losses. Melvin Capital, which had been among the most prominent short sellers, reportedly lost approximately USD 6.8 billion in January 2021 and ultimately closed the fund in June 2022. Other short-selling funds also experienced losses, and the episode prompted a broader reassessment of short-selling risk.

The event also raised questions about market structure and regulation. Trading platforms including Robinhood temporarily restricted purchases of GameStop and other heavily traded stocks on 28 January, citing capital requirements. This decision drew intense criticism from users and members of Congress, leading to hearings before the House Financial Services Committee in February 2021.

The GameStop episode highlighted the growing influence of retail investors in equity markets, the role of social media in coordinating trading activity, and the potential for extreme volatility in heavily shorted stocks. For investors, it underscored the importance of risk management, the dangers of speculative trading, and the need to understand the mechanics of short selling before engaging with it.
