In November 2022, FTX, then the second-largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world by trading volume, collapsed in one of the most dramatic failures in financial history. The company, valued at USD 32 billion in a January 2022 funding round, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on 11 November 2022.

The crisis began on 2 November 2022 when CoinDesk published an article revealing that Alameda Research, a trading firm owned by FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, held a significant portion of its balance sheet in FTT, a token created by FTX. This raised concerns about the financial relationship between the exchange and its affiliated trading arm.

Binance's CEO Changpeng Zhao publicly announced on 6 November that Binance would sell its holdings of FTT, triggering a bank run on FTX. Customers attempted to withdraw approximately USD 6 billion in 72 hours, and FTX halted withdrawals on 8 November. A tentative rescue deal by Binance fell through the same day.

The bankruptcy proceedings subsequently revealed that FTX had allegedly misappropriated customer funds, lending billions to Alameda Research for speculative trading. In March 2023, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Department of Justice filed charges against Bankman-Fried, who was later convicted on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy in October 2023.

The FTX collapse underscored the risks associated with unregulated or lightly regulated financial markets. For investors, it reinforced several principles: the importance of understanding custody arrangements, the risks of concentrated exposure to a single platform, and the dangers of investing in assets or platforms where transparency is limited. Cryptocurrency and digital assets remain a speculative area that requires careful consideration of regulatory, counterparty, and operational risks.
